A Blogger's Bookshelf: Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore

Hey peoples!

Bonus post for you today- it's about time for A Blogger's Bookshelf!

Today I have a super exciting post for you as despite it being one of my most recent reads, it's become one of my favourite books. Behold, Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan.

I give it an amazingly awesome 5 Stars.

There is one way to describe the genre of this book. And that is 'realistic adventure'... Think fantasy epic adventure, but in the very real, very familiar world that we all know. It's set mostly in the sunny (and foggy) town of San Francisco that I know all too well, with snippits of Google HQ (which I've driven past and it looks amazing), the Golden Gate bridge, and a couple of chapters in New York, New York.

Also the references in this book are just so perfect. There's little geeky references to typical items that you (or at least, I did) just click with, and there's thought provoking lines that make you stop and consider everything you've ever known.

The basic story line follows the main character, Clay, and his 'quest' to find a new job and where that leads him. (Hint: It leads him to Mr Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore) But what he finds there is incredibly weird, yet perfect, and more incredible than you could ever have expected. Think clubs you'd never even have considered. Secrets that you could never even imagine. A wizard, a warrior and a rogue, on a quest to figure out the biggest secret of all... But I won't tell you what it is because that would be foolish and a huge spoiler and I just couldn't do that to you all.

There's even an aspect of romance throughout the book as Clay, just like any normal, real person would do, dates an actual other normal, real person, despite her being very eccentric and me wanting to be her. Seriously though, this is not a stupid fiction relationship like other books have as 'side-stories'. It's just, a perfect fit.

And with that, I leave you with a quote, from somewhere near the end of the book, a huge book-filled hole in my heart, a million questions in my head, and a fantastically ginormous thank you to Robin Sloane for writing this (and Ashleigh for recommending I read it).
"All the secrets in the world worth knowing, are hiding in plain sight."

Thanks for reading. Let me know what you think of the book if you decide to give it a shot!

Also, I'm actually going on holiday (again, I know) tomorrow for a week, so posts are postponed until Wednesday 16th September! See you then, stay safe! =)

Fridail: OPI Beach Sandies!

Happy Wednesday  Friday everybody! Where did the time go!? Anyway, we'll dive straight in with the post! I apologise in advance for the iPhone-quality of images, I'm still looking for some batteries that my camera won't complain about. Today I'm covering OPI's Beach Sandies from the Brazil collection, which is a little quartet of mini liquid sand polishes. Can I just say here, if anyone high up in the chain of OPI reads this (which is unlikely, but if you do then HI!), please please pleeeeease make these in full-sized bottles? Please! So... This is the box, and the four that you get (I swatched super quickly over each, so do excuse that)
