A Blogger's Bookshelf: My Reading Habits

Hi Paraders,

As I'm sure a lot of you know, I love books. I love bookstores. I love choosing books and smelling books and flicking through the pages of a freshly printed paperback. (Though I also love kindles and their convenience.)

However, nothing is that simple. And even when you love something, you have to let it go. Or maybe in this case, it lets me go instead. I'm not quite sure. Anyway, my reading habits are literally all over the place. I'm a literary mess.

So, I guess I have a 'reading cycle' (the scientist in me wants to question whether this is related to any other cycles, like hormones or the moon or whatever... hm.) which involves many ups and downs of YES LET'S READ ALL THE THINGS and 'I want to read but I don't at the same time' and 'I love books but I don't want to read right now'. And so the cycle begins, and continues. Sometimes it varies in length - I'll read and read and read for months on end and then suddenly hit a wall.

A reader's block, you could say.

Even when there's a book I've been waiting forever to come out, I won't read it if I'm in such a grumpy reader's block phase. And yet I will still look for more books to read on amazon, in book stores, on Goodreads etc. There is no escaping my love for books, even when I'm not reading. Then if anyone asks me if I like books and reading during this time I always feel super guilty for saying yes, as I'm not actually reading anything in that moment... But hey, it's not a lie, right?

Then on top of this cycle there's a genres option. It's like with a washing machine - you've chosen the cycle and now you should choose the temperature. Usually, I will read anything (except historical fiction, not my thing), but there are some times - now is one, for example - where I am exceptionally choosy. Right this moment I want to read something cute, and happy and adorable and even romantic. Usually, I avoid romance like the plague, it usually just seems like an unnecessary secondary thing thrown in at the end to please people, and it's 9 times out of 10, a love triangle. We've heard it all before, people. (Though sometimes it works, so please carry on... Please.)

Anyway, yes, when the time comes that genre is an issue, it brings me to a potentially new problem - reading more than one book at once. This is both a moment to treasure and a moment to panic. It both provides you with an in-the-moment-choice, whilst being limited to those small two, or three, options. For me, it allows me to read a paperback, and a kindle book (or multiple kindle books), and carry both/all of them around with me with minimal effort.

And so, I think that's a basic insight to my reading habits. Do any of you feel the same way? Surely I'm not the only one? (I'm hoping, anyway.)

Current 'reading' status: So much to read, too much choice, too hard to choose, too little time.
Actually reading: Storm Front, by Jim Butcher (paperback), and Eleanor and Park, by Rainbow Rowell (kindle)

I'm also always looking for new reading material. So... TELL ME YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK! I demand to know.

Swatch Watch: OPI 'Sprung'

Greetings! Wooo time got away from me for a couple of weeks. Has it really been so long already? My apologies to any of you who have been eagerly waiting for new swatches (I know I have)! To make it up to you I've got a swatch for you today which, in my opinion, is pretty "in season" right now. I'm talking about the Rose Gold trend that's been going on for a year or two now - who would of known it would become so popular? Today's nail polish is: OPI 'Sprung'. It sounds like it should be a spring green kinda colour... but nope! This polish is a beautiful rose-gold kind of colour with a perfect amount of shimmer to be classy and sophisticated. Don't believe me? Here it is! Fact File: Brand:  OPI Polish Name:  Sprung # of coats:  3 + (applies quite thin) Finishing Texture:  Smooth, shimmer Cost: £3.10 at the time of writing, on tnbl.co.uk So I paired this polish with this gel-finish dotty topcoat... thing.
